Some dogs have extreme reactions to sounds.

Being startled by sudden noises is normal for all of us. But some dogs can’t settle back down and have extreme reactions and anxiety.

Those dogs may cower, pace, tremble, pant, vocalize, cling to their owners, and/or hide. Others will become frantic, even tearing out nails scratching to find a safe place.

It can be heartbreaking to watch this anxious or desperate dog. Noise aversion is a true panic disorder and it shouldn’t be ignored.

Your dog’s fear might be from storms (starting even before that first clap of thunder), fireworks, traffic or construction noise, household appliances, or any other sound in your dog’s world.

Noise aversion often becomes worse over time. This can result in severely suffering pets and compromised quality of life for the pet and the owner.

We’re here to help you and make your dog feel safer.

Now there is a course that can help your dog.

Who is this course for?

This course is for owners with dogs who become fearful or stressed due to environmental noises. It’s what sends dogs cowering under the couch when fireworks burst in the night sky or a car backfires. The dog is distressed by the noise and wants to get away. Fireworks, thunder and gun shots are obvious triggers for dogs with noise aversion, but a wide variety of environmental sounds can also be disturbing to dogs—children shrieking, loud TV noises, doors slamming, loud engine noises, and much more.

How can I tell if my dog has Noise Aversion? What are the signs?

If your dog exhibits any of these behaviors in response to noise, you need this course: trembling or shaking; ears back and brow furrowed; abnormal clinginess; pacing or restlessness; excessive panting; hiding; cowering; refusing to eat; excessive vigilance; vocalizing (whining or barking at the sound; freezing or immobility; lip licking; yawning.

Some dogs may develop generalized anxiety and will refuse to walk outside at all. They may begin to eliminate in the house because of that. Or they won’t walk during the day and their owner has to take them out only when it’s dark.

Every dog will be different and every dog will recover from the noise trigger at different rates after the noise stops. These recovery periods include: immediately; within an  hour; several hours; and a day or more.

Why is my dog like this?

While some dogs may inherit this trait, others may develop it. Usually, dogs who develop this trait do so because they had a bad experience associated with a loud noise, which in turn makes them fearful of loud noises. It is estimated that noise aversion affects one-third of dogs in the United States.
